Garden Challenge and Fresh From the Patch Strawberries

Back in February I signed up for the Garden Challenge over at Hen and Harvest. I committed to give at least 10% of my garden goods to a local food bank, pantry, soup kitchen or another organization that gives to those who are in need. I have enough goods now to start donating and I am very excited to share with others in this way. If you are interested in participating in this challenge check it out here.

One of the items I, and everyone else I suppose,  seem to be getting a lot of right now is lettuce and spinach. My spinach is growing well and the CSA I’m a part of (I will update you soon about my CSA goods) is and has given me a lot of lettuces/greens. My family likes salads but we have an overabundance currently and are very happy to share with others.

On another note, here is a picture of our first harvest of strawberries! The picture is missing a few thanks to cute, tiny hands. The babes adore the strawberries.

Garden Update: Early to Mid May

Everything is growing well! The pear tree officially has growth! And I have harvested a bit of broccoli raab already. The spinach and mustard greens are almost ready. The carrots are coming up and all the beans and peas are doing better than I expected. I need to cover the strawberries tonight with the bird netting…Spring is here!

I realized yesterday that I still have not filled in the last two pie slices of the Pizza Garden…oops! This evening I plan to go ahead and sow herbs in one of the slices and I am going to go ahead and plant some tomatillo plants in the other slice. Tomatillo plants in the pizza garden?? Yes! I honestly do not know where else to put them. But also I know I can make a good tomatillo sauce as the beginning of a mexican pizza. I am reallly excited though to make Posole with them-yum!

Currant Bush and Strawberry Plants Update

The currant stick has begun to grow shoots! I took a few pictures but I could not seem to get them to focus but you can see the green coming out, I think. The strawberry plants as well are growing. The leaves are broader and the plants are taller. In the transition from receiving them in the mail to getting them into soil I seem to have lost 3 plants. I may have actually lost 2 in the frosty weather over the last two weeks but I think it was from the transtion into soil. Regardless I have 47 plants left which hopefully will be plenty to produce an abundance of strawberries.
